Northwich Victoria are through to the 5th round of the Evo-Stik League Challenge Cup, but needed extra time to see off the challenge of brave Newcastle Town.
The visitors took the lead against the run of play on 42 minutes, as Oliver Ryan’s low cross was swept into the net by Wayne Riley from close range.
Newcastle almost found an instant response, but Neville Thompson’s flick was cleared off the line by the alert David Thompson.
Chris Budrys’ should have brought them level early in the second half, but he fired over after Thompson found him with a clever layoff.
Northwich could have doubled their advantage in bizarre circumstances on 66 minutes, as Louis James almost sliced John Macalisky’s cross into his own net.
Newcastle finally drew level in the final minute of normal time, as Andrew White’s cross was nodded on by Michael Douglas to Thompson. The striker’s first effort was saved by keeper James Spencer, but he was on hand to slam the rebound high into the net from close range.
Northwich restored their lead three minutes into extra time, as Neil Sorvell’s excellent through ball was driven low beyond Town keeper Danny Read by Ryan from ten yards.
Newcastle almost forced penalties in the second half of extra time, but Budrys couldn’t direct Ryan Dicker’s cross goalwards from close range. For them it is now their worst run of form under Manager Greg Clowes, having now lost the last three games.
