Wigan Robin Park advanced to the third round of the Vodkat Challenge League Cup, as they snatched an extra time winner against Norton United.
The visitors began the game well, and Chris McNally almost put them ahead on eight minutes but his low drive was pushed away by Norton keeper Leigh Miller.
Norton settled, and had a decent chances themselves three minutes later as Scott Dundas stung the palms of Wigan stopper Jason Foulds.
The Lancashire side took the lead just past the half hour mark, as Steven Edwards slammed home from close range after McNally’s initial effort had been parried by Leigh Miller.
Norton almost restored parity before the break, but Ashley Miller’s freekick was palmed away by the impressive Foulds.
Wigan almost doubled their lead at the start of the second half, when Chris Williams’ long range drive was fumbled by Leigh Miller, but he recovered at the second attempt.
Norton were level on 62 minutes as Ashley Hill’s deep cross to the back post, was nodded into the top corner by sub Jonathon Beaumont.
The Community Drive outfit were lifted by the goal, and should of gone ahead seven minutes as Dan Brown fired over after being put clean through by Tom Fogg.
The game went into extra time with Norton looking the more likely to snatch a winner. But they were undone by virtually the last kick of the game as Dean Midgeloy found Paul Vermiglio inside the box, and he rolled Dean Smith before firing through the legs of keeper Miller.
Wigan Robin Park will play Stone Dominoes in the next round.
