Newcastle Town suffered only their second league defeat of the season, as they were overwhelmed by a second half comeback by Belper Town.
Newcastle appeared to be in control after twice taking the lead through Neville Thompson, but conceded a penalty before Nicky Darker snatched the winner for Belper with three minutes left.
The home side took the lead on 25 minutes, as Peter Heler’s low cross from the right was slammed home at the near post by the alert Thompson.
They could have doubled their lead a minute into the second half, but Jon Sheldon’s dipping freekick was tipped over the bar by keeper Alessandro Barcherini.
Belper drew level on 56 minutes as Darker’s drive from the edge of the area was parried by Danny Read, and Jon Froggatt was on hand to slam home the rebound from close range.
Newcastle regained the lead just three minutes later, as Ian Willis’ freekick appeared to be handled in the box by Kallum Keane. As some Newcastle players protested to the officials, Thompson controlled before slamming high into the net.
Belper were given a chance to level on 74 minutes as Sheldon was adjudged to have handled in the box. Froggatt stepped up to calmly slot low into the left corner, sending Reed the wrong way.
With just three minutes left the Derbyshire based side snatched all three points, as Liam Davis’ teasing cross was swept into the net by Darker.
They were reduced to ten men seconds later, as Daryll Thomas was shown a second yellow card for foul and abusive language to one of the officials.
