Kidsgrove Athletic Manager Peter Ward has admitted his side’s title charge is still alive, after they hammered mid table Romulus at the Seddon Stadium.
“After losing to Barwell last week, we have won 5-1 and 6-1 and they still have some really hard fixtures to come. We have killed the game in the first half hour tonight, and they just had no answer. Matt Haddrell was superb again tonight, as was Sam Hall who has also worked his way back into the team in the last few weeks,” Ward said.
The game was effectively over as a contest by half time, as Kidsgrove raced into a 3-0 lead with two strikes from Dave Walker and an effort from Haddrell.
They took the lead on 17 minutes as Ricky Bridge’s low cross from the left was prodded home at close range by Walker.
The lead was doubled on six minutes later as Tim Sanders’ corner from the left, was powerfully headed home at the near post by Haddrell.
A minute later it was three for Grove, as Craig Dove’s slide rule ball sent Walker clear, and he slotted low beyond the reach of bewildered keeper Niall Cooper.
Romulus improved before half time, with Ashley Jackson and Dean Baker both bringing saves from Grove keeper Steve Hodgson.
Walker rounded off his hat trick just after the hour mark, as Aiden Matranga’s diagonal pass put the forward clear and he slotted through the legs of Cooper.
Romulus claimed a consolation on 70 minutes, as Nathan Walker’s long range drive crept inside the left corner of the net.
Kidsgrove rounded off the scoring from the penalty spot with six minutes left, as Karl Charlton was uppended in the box by Luke Paskin. Haddrell stepped up to calmly slot low into the right corner of the net, as Cooper went thr wrong way.
